Maryland couple hacked, lose thousands of dollars

A couple living in Maryland has been the victim of yet another cyber crime. They thought they were safe and protected by doing the necessary password selections and avoiding using their credit and debit cards. But then they were hacked and thousands of dollars was stolen from their bank account. The victims said it started with minor withdrawals from their account. Some were as low as $0.17 and $0.79, so they didn’t noticed them at all. Then the amounts became larger, amounting to as much as $4,000 in unauthorized charges. Although the stolen money was insured by the FDIC, the victims were also concerns about possible personal information that might have been stolen by the hackers. Since the hack, some people have suggested the couple should go beyond the existing system of security involving passwords and use an app that generates a one-time password. These apps give the user a new password every time they log in to their accounts. The victims now recommend that people watch their money very carefully. The incident proves that anyone can be the target of these costly hacks, including an individual person, an organization or a business, if they are unprepared and unprotected. Therefore, people should always be alert, specifically about their personal financial accounts.
