Don't forget about paper records! Planned Parenthood Data Breach Affects 2K+ Patients

Some of the most recent cases of healthcare breaches include hacking incidents, hospital ransomware, unauthorized access and email disclosure errors. Sometimes it's hard to remember that paper records still have a role to play in patient privacy.

An Iowa-based healthcare center recently closed, leading to a data exposure affecting 2,506 patients. The data breach may have had affected patients treated between August 2008 and April 2015 when an unauthorized individual accessed their PHI after the practice closure and sale.

Affected information includes names, mailing addresses, insurance information, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical record numbers, treatments, lab results and diagnosis.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland stated it is taking necessary steps to protect patient privacy and confidentiality. The Chief Clinical Officer, Penny Dicky, expressed a commitment to follow and even surpass the state and federal regulatory standards.

All affected individuals have also been informed about the healthcare data breach.
